Jacky Eakes – County Commission District 5
Tell us about yourself and your roots to Lincoln County.
I was born, raised, and have lived in Lincoln County my entire life. My wife Lisa, who was my high school sweetheart, can say the same. Together, we have three wonderful children, two daughter-in-laws and five grandchildren who all live here, as well.
23 years ago, my wife and I started a mom-and pop business. We grew it to over 250 employees, all of whom were good people and hard workers. We recently sold the business, but Lisa and I still have our farm where we raise cattle and cut our own hay.
I’ve also been a deacon in my church for over 30 years and have coached many ball teams throughout the years. I love being a part of Lincoln County and am proud to call it my home.
Why are you running for County Commission District 5?
I’m at a point in my life where I have the time, experience, and desire to give back to a
community that has been so good to me.
What experience do you believe prepares you for this office?
As a business owner, I’ve signed the front of paychecks, not just the back. I know what it means
to plan, budget, lead people, and make decisions that affect many families.
How would your business background shape your approach to county government?
Government is not exactly the same as business, but most principles do carry over: plan ahead,
know what things cost, respect the people paying the bills, and don’t make promises without
knowing how to pay for them.
What are your top priorities if elected?
My ultimate priority is to improve the quality of life for all our residents so that their families
call Lincoln County their home for years to come. I plan on accomplishing this through three
avenues.
One, I believe in fiscal responsibility. We need to be careful stewards of our tax dollars and avoidunnecessary spending and property tax increases.
Economic development is equally important. My work will support local businesses and attract
new industry. If we’re able to employ people here so they don’t have to travel, two things are
accomplished: we help the quality of life for the employees while increasing our tax base.
Finally, infrastructure is essential. I’ll use my business experience to make sure roads, utilities,
and projects are done efficiently.
How can economic development in Lincoln County grow while preserving the county’s
character?
Our economic development means more local opportunity. People should not have to leave
Lincoln County everyday just to make a living. We need growth, but not reckless growth. The
goal is more opportunity while protecting the character of our communities, farms, families, and neighborhoods.
What is your approach to taxes and county spending?
My goal is to avoid unnecessary tax by planning ahead, staying within budget, growing the tax
base through responsible economic development, and exploring alternative ways of securing
capital that don’t rely on a tax burden to property owners.
In business, if you’re spending more than you are taking in, you go broke. You don’t have the
option of raising taxes.
With proper planning, we can stay within our budget, so property taxes won’t have to be raised
like they previously were.
How would you work with other officials and agencies to get things done?
I’ve worked with all kinds of people in business and on job sites. You don’t always agree, but
you stay focused on the common goal, communicate clearly, and get the work done.
You said you’re not a politician. What do you mean by that?
When I say I’m not a politician, I mean I’m not running for a title. I’m running because I care
about this county and believe my experience can help. I’m a businessman, yes, but I’m more than
that, too. I’m a Christian, family man, and your neighbor. All my decisions will be through those important lenses.
What message would you like to leave with voters in District 5?
I’m from Lincoln County and am for Lincoln County. I’ve built a business, raised a family, and
served this community. I want to use that experience to help our county move forward.
